New Link: Citizens Commission on Human Rights International

In keeping with our philosophy of open-mindedness, respect for individual freedom, and open access to all information for all people in the maelstrom of mental illness, PsychOdyssey is pleased to post this new international link, which we have just discovered today. The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is a non-profit mental health watchdog co-founded in 1969 by the Church of Scientology and Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus Dr. Thomas Szasz. According to its website, CCHR is responsible for helping to enact more than 150 laws protecting individuals from abusive or coercive practices. CCHR seeks to restore basic unalienable human rights to the field of mental health, including, but not limited to, full informed consent regarding the medical legitimacy of psychiatric diagnosis, the risks of psychiatric treatments, the right to all available medical alternatives, and the right to refuse any treatment considered harmful. A psychiatrist himself, Dr. Szasz is a noted social critic of the moral and scientific foundations of psychiatry and author of The Myth Of Mental Illness. The CCHR website presents a variety of interesting information, dramatic testimonials, and finely produced videos, including the one below.
